A ward councillor arrested for damaging school property

A Ward Councillor in Pienaar appeared before the Kanyamazane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 4 September 2023. Mandla Siboza (41) was arrested for allegedly damaging padlocks and doors at a certain Secondary School on 27 August 2023 . According to a report, Siboza together with five other men allegedly went to the school and then demanded to use a hall.

It is further alleged that on their arrival the school gate was locked and the time he forcefully opened the gate using a bolt cutter to break open the padlock.

Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said it is also alleged that Siboza informed the security guard that he was authorised to utilize the hall at the school over weekends, the claims which both the school’s principal and School Governing Body (SGB) disputed.

“The Councillor and his team are said to have reportedly proceeded to break open another padlock as well as four doors. The total value of the damaged properties is estimated at R8 000”.

Mdluli added that a case of malicious property damage was registered at Pienaar SAPS. An investigation was conducted which led to the arrest of the Councillor on Monday, 04 September 2023.

Siboza is remanded in custody and is expected to make a formal bail application on Friday, 08 September 2023.
