The City of Cape Town says it is pleased that the taxi strike has come to an end. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis added that they appreciate the constructive approach taken by minibus taxi association Santaco on Thursday.

On Thursday evening, SANTACO published a statement saying  “It is with profound relief that we announce the immediate cessation of the Stay Away. This comes after painstaking deliberations and immense pressure on all parties involved.”

SANTACO added that there is an agreement between the Tazi industry and the government. “The next 14 days will be utilised to work towards the release of the vehicles that were wrongly impounded”.

Meanwhile, Mayor Lewis reiterated that SANTACo gained nothing from the violence, as they ended up accepting the same deal they rejected 8 days ago.

“It is time for Santaco – and for all South Africans – to take to heart the lesson from the past week: violence will get us nowhere”.
