The Piet Retief Magistrate Court on Thursday, 27 July 2023 remanded Bonginkosi Enerst Zwane (44) and his son Thabiso Zwane (22) for corruption and rape.
It is alleged that on 17 July 2023, Bonginkosi was informed that his son Thabiso was arrested for rape. It was further alleged that Bonginkosi approached the investigating officer from Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) with a bribe of R4000 so that he could destroy the case.
Mpumalanga Hawks Spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said the investigating officer accepted the proposal, and they agreed that the money to the amount of R4500 should be paid on Wednesday, 26 July 2023 as his son’s case was remanded to 27 July 2023.
“The matter was reported to the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation based in Secunda. An undercover operation was organised. On Wednesday, the father brought the money to pay the investigating officer and received a copy of the case docket for destruction as agreed. The suspect was arrested immediately upon receiving the money”.
The case of corruption against the father was remanded to 01 August 2023 for formal bail application and the son to 3 August 2023 also for formal bail application.
