The African National Congress mourns the passing of anti-apartheid activist and liberation struggle veteran Comrade Ralph Pietersen who was a member of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and Intelligence Liaison Officer in Angola during the most critical phase of the democratic revolution.

The ruling party said comrade Lawrence belongs to a generation of activists who refused to be bystanders while the apartheid government trampled upon the oppressed people of our country. “Instead they picked up their spear and committed wholeheartedly sparing no life nor limb to struggle for South Africa’s liberation at a time when it was not fashionable to do so”.

The ANC said it dips its revolutionary banner in honour of this great son of the soil and gallant fighter who put the interests of the nation before his personal comfort.  “We extend our deepest condolences to the comrades, family, friends and loved ones of Cde Lawrence. May they find solace in knowing that their loss is shared by the entire mass democratic movement and the nation at large”
