The Police in Limpopo arrested five suspects aged between 27 and 50 for allegedly tampering with the electricity supply to Sefateng Chrome Mine in the Mecklenburg policing area outside Burgersfort.
A group of people calling themselves Mampa Community Forum have allegedly been throwing chains on the powerlines that supply electricity to the said Mine, thereby tripping the power supply. This after they apparently could not have their demands met by the mine.
Limpopo Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the group has allegedly been engaged in these activities since 13 February 2023 until they were stopped by the Police on Thursday 16 March 2023.
Mojapelo said a case of extortion was then opened and the Provincial Organized Crime Unit took over the investigation. The suspects are expected to appear in Praktiseer magistrate court on Monday 20 March 2023. More arrests are expected.
