A 50-year-old woman was shot and killed in broad daylight at Shoprite on the main road of Newlands in the west of Johannesburg on Thursday. It is unclear at this stage what the motive was for the shooting which led to the victim’s death but the police have ruled out an armed robbery.

Captain T de Bruyn said the police are investigating the possible link to gang-related violence. “According to eyewitnesses, a coloured male drew a firearm and started shooting at the deceased who was declared dead on the scene by paramedics of Help 24 EMS”.

De Bruyn added that no one has been arrested and the police are following up on leads. The police also request any member of the public with information to contact their nearest police station.
