ActionSA says it is extremely concerned about the closures of more beaches in the Western Cape. Strand Beach on the False Bay coastline and Small Bay in Blaauwberg have been closed due to sewage spills.
ActionSA Western Cape Provincial Chairperson Michelle Wasserman said many residents of the affected areas rely on tourism to make a living. “Sewage spills and beach closures result in businesses and informal traders not being able to generate the income in this busy tourist season that they are counting
Wasserman added that reports are showing that the Western Cape tourism industry has, to some extent, recovered from the devastating effects of Covid. “It is essential that those involved in tourism are given every opportunity to rebuild what they have lost. The closure of beaches due to sewage spills is the last thing that the Western Cape tourism industry needs right now”.
ActionSA calls on the City of Cape Town to identify the cause of, and fix the problem without delay.
