Four suspects aged between 19 and 37 are expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday 11 November 2022 facing charges of illegal mining. They were arrested on Thursday in Driekop outside Burgersfort for allegedly being involved in illegal mining operations and seizure of mining equipment.
Limpopo Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Crime Prevention Unit, Detectives, Public Order Policing and Organised Crime Investigation followed up on information and executed an operation on the Moihoek mountain.
“The four suspects were found mining chrome, other exhibits found at the scene included; 15× Generators, 4× jackhammers, 1×hammer, 4 ×shovels, 02 ×peaks, 1×plier, 1×chisel and 1x crowbar”.
Meanwhile Limpopo Police Commissioner We commend the collaboration between the police and community for the successful bust of such a serious criminal operation. Hadebe said they are confident that the arrested suspects will face the full might of the law.
