PUTCO says it rejects the assertions made by NUMSA that Putco management is unwilling to engage and find solutions to the current impasse.

PUTCO spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu said management met with the leadership of Numsa on the 7th of September 2022 because it is open to resolving issues that have led to the illegal strike, but the meeting collapsed, not because Putco was unwilling to find an amicable solution, but due to the conduct of the Numsa delegation, led by the General Secretary Mr Irvin Jim.

Xulu added that Putco is happy to share transcripts of the said meeting. “The Numsa statement is defamatory and devoid of the truth in many aspects and Putco is urging the union’s leadership to act responsibly”.

Drivers at Putco have been on strike for days, demanding their bonuses. Xulu said the wage increase and bonus payment that is in dispute is applicable only for 2020 and is a matter currently before the Labour Court. “Until that court makes a ruling, no bonus and no increase are owed to employees”.

Meanwhile, on Thursday,08 September 2022, Labour court ruled that striking workers must immediately report to work or face dismissals.
