Man shot dead during an alleged hijacking

A driver was brutally murdered during an alleged hijacking incident on Saturday evening,20 August 2022 at Calcutta area near Bushbuckridge.

According to the information, a group of armed suspects ambushed the driver of a silver Toyota Corolla as they attempted to hijack his vehicle. It is said that when he realised that he was about to be robbed, he drove off trying to escape from his assailants who then gave chase.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said that shortly the victim’s vehicle bumped into a tree. “It is further alleged that the suspects shot him multiple times while he was behind the wheel before they fled the scene, leaving him to die.

Police and the paramedics were informed about the incident and upon arrival, the man was unfortunately certified dead at the scene. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the male victim, identified as Nelson Shabangu (49) was shot after noticing one of his assailants.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned the senseless killing of the man and vowed that police will not rest until all suspects are put behind bars.
