7.9 million people in South Africa remain unemployed

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Tuesday issued the results of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for Q1: 2022. These results indicate that 370 000 jobs were gained between the fourth quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022.

However, there were job losses in Private households (186 000), Finance (72 000), Construction (60 000) and Agriculture (23 000). The total number of persons employed was 14,9 million in the first quarter of 2022.

The number of unemployed persons decreased by 60 000 to 7,9 million in the 1st quarter of 2022 compared to the previous quarter. Although there was a slight decline in the number of unemployed youth in Q1: 2022, the youth remained vulnerable in the labour market.
