The Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula, commended the South African Maritime Safety Authority for their swift response in containing the oil spill and activating necessary protocols following an oil spill at Algoa Bay in Eastern Cape.
According to a statement by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE), the oil spill occurred around midday on Monday during a ship-to-ship transfer of oil.
Minister Mbalula said protecting marine life and the environment is crucial. “If we are to reap the immeasurable benefits of the oceans economy, we have to ensure that those who use the ocean play their part in protecting it and preserving marine life”
The Minister is encouraged that SAMSA is working with the affected vessel owners, relevant authorities and other stakeholders to contain the spill and ensure that damage to the environment and marine and birdlife is minimised.
