SARS official arrested for corruption

A 44-year-old suspect was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team and Serious Corruption Investigation members arrested on Friday, 29 April 2022 on allegations of theft and corruption. The suspect was arrested after a complaint of corrupt behaviour by SARS (Custom) Upington was received by DPCI Upington.

Hawks Spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said the complainant alleged that his uncle’s minibus was impounded by the South African Revenue Services Customs Division in Kakamas on 02 November 2021 and no fine was issued. “He approached the arrested official with a view of having the minibus released. The official then demanded a bribe of eight thousand (R8000.00) rand before the minibus could be released to its lawful owner.”

Thebe added that an operation was executed and the suspect was arrested. He is expected to appear at Upington Magistrate court on Tuesday, 03 May 2022.
