The National Freedom Party is appealing to government officials and cadre’s of a ruling party to show ubuntu (humanity) by not stealing flood relief funds.

Secretary-General Cannan Mdletshe said they say this based on their previous experiences where the money that had been budgeted for Covid-19 relief was stolen by thugs masquerading as government officials. Mdletshe added that hundreds of people have been displaced, damage amounting to billions have been incurred as a result of violent floods and necessary interventions is required, and not corruption.

“We are making a clarion call to all the powers that be to be considerate. They must think about all those who have lost everything they had during floods that ravaged KZN, eThekwini in particular.

This is not a time and period for councillors to steal whatever resources that should be assisting needy people. This is not a time for scavenging.”

Mdetshe further said they also call on Treasury to tighten screws so it would be difficult for thugs to steal and divert funds set aside for those in need. “We are well aware that fraudsters are queueing for the opportunity to get their hands into public funds. We call on all law enforcement agencies, especially the Hawks and SIU to be ready because thieves are preparing themselves.”
