Two police sergeants, Ngwazi Agrippa Ngwanyama (48) and Isaack Victor Sambo (39) appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrates’ court on Wednesday and they were released on R2000 bail each.
The accused were arrested on Wednesday, 13 April 2022 by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Nelspruit for corruption. It is alleged that on 26 September 2021, the duo demanded R10 000 from the suspect who was arrested for drunk driving in order for him to be released.
Bonnie Nxumalo of Mpumalanga Hawks said the suspect was already issued free bail from the police station. “The alleged suspect phoned his girlfriend who managed to raise R2000 and deposited the money into his account. The two police officials took him along in a police vehicle to a mall to withdraw the cash.”
Nxumalo added that the man was also ordered to pay back the airtime voucher that he used to call his girlfriend. The incident was reported to the Hawks for investigation which resulted in the arrest of the accused.
The case is postponed to 4 July 2022 for them to appear at the Nelspruit Serious Commercial Crime Court.
