Three people were killed and three others escaped with serious injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash involving three trucks and a loading van on the R578 road at Mbhokota Village outside Elim in Vhembe. It is alleged that a truck heading East had brakes failure and collided head-on with another truck.
Mike Maringa of Limpopo Transport said the driver of the loading van and two people from a truck were killed instantly.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya said she is worried about the number of fatal crashes on the road ahead of the Easter holidays. The MEC is urging motorists to check the condition of their vehicles before they embark on their journeys.
“As the department, we are concerned about the road carnage caused by unroadworthy vehicles. We are heading to Easter and I urge motorists, especially public transport operators and truck drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy”.
MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya stressed that their operations will be very tight and they will impound vehicles that are not fit to be on the roads.
