A 17-year-old learner to appear in court for sexual assault

A 17-year-old learner is expected to appear before Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing sexual assault and assault common charges which occurred on Friday, 25 February 2022 at Hivuyeriwile Commercial school in Dzingidzingi village outside Giyani.

It is alleged that a 15-year-old girl was assaulted by the suspect before the classes commenced. Afterwards, the victim walked to the Principal’s office to report about the assault and it was referred to the Disciplinary Committee.

Limpopo Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the matter was reportedly dealt with and it was concluded that the learner would be suspended from the school. “It is alleged that the victim went back to the classroom and she was followed by the suspect who continued to assault her while threatening to beat her until she either dropped out of the school or loved him so that she could have peace.”

Mojapelo said after the ordeal, Police were summoned to the premises and upon their arrival, the suspect jumped over the school fence and fled the scene. “A manhunt for the suspect was launched and led to his apprehension within a short period. He was later released into the custody of his parents until his court appearance”.

The suspect will be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act.
