Two suspects aged 40 and 47 are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ court on Friday on charges of corruption and extortion.

It is alleged that on Monday, 21 February 2022, the two male, South African Revenue Service (SARS) investigators contacted a complainant regarding the alleged outstanding personal tax return of R250 000.

Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu of Hawks said the pair allegedly demanded R150 000 from the complainant to remove the alleged tax return debt from the SARS system. “The matter was reported to authorities for investigation. An intelligence-driven operation was conducted on Wednesday by Crime Intelligence at a restaurant in Brooklyn, Pretoria where both the suspects were arrested.”

The matter was transferred to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in Pretoria for further investigation.
