A 42-year-old medical doctor Zonke Mrwenqwa Mazwi was released on R10 000 bail by Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crime Court for allegations of Road Accident Fund (RAF) fraud.
Between February 2008 and February 2019 Mazwi was confirmed to have treated 75 patients who were involved in 9 different accidents that took place between the aforesaid period. She is reported to have written medical reports that recommended her undeserving clients to different law firms to be assisted with RAF claims.
Captain Yolisa Mgolodela of Eastern Cape Hawks said RAF is reported to have successfully paid out R510 000 to the claimants before discovering some discrepancies in the other claims. “RAF referred the case to Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for investigation in 2019 which resulted in Mazwi’s arrest on 16 February 2022.”
Mgolodela said the investigation further revealed that besides the R510 000 alleged to have been paid to other claimants, RAF nearly ran a potential loss of more than R18 million. The matter is remanded to 28 March 2022 for further investigation.
