Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer died on Sunday after being hit by a car while on duty on the R24/N3 split at Gillooly’s interchange. The Freeway Unit officer was run over when attempting to stop a vehicle in the left lane.

The driver of the VW Polo fled the scene of the accident and was pursued by fellow officers and he was arrested in Johannesburg. He was detained at Bedfordview police station and charged with culpable homicide, fleeing the scene of an accident and reckless and negligent driving.

Councillor Letlhogonolo Moseki said they will not tolerate such reckless and criminal behaviour. “Driving recklessly does not only put the driver of the vehicle at risk, but also places all other road users at risk as well.”
