The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Madibeng Local Municipality says it has requested an urgent meeting with Speaker, Ditshego Mbezi, to address the general dysfunctionality of the Council.
DA Caucus Leader in Madibeng Local Municipality Jan Van Rhyn said this follows the ‘disgusting’ behaviour by ANC and EFF Councillors during Thursday‘s Council meeting.
“ANC and EFF Councillors were involved in an intense disagreement over the 2021/22 First Quarter Performance Report. The situation deteriorated, dumping the meeting into chaos for almost two hours which almost led to physical altercations.”
Van Rhyn said without shame, the Councillors hurled threats of violence and employed the vilest profanities. “Only after the EFF Councillors were removed from the Council chambers by security, the meeting could continue to finalise matters on the agenda.”
He added that the DA condemns the destructive and disruptive behaviour of ANC and EFF Councillors in the strongest possible terms and will demand of Speaker Mbezi to initiate the necessary disciplinary proceedings against all Councillors involved in the transgression of the guidelines as per the Code of Conduct for Councillors as stated in the Municipal Systems Act (No 32 of 2002).
“Four months after the local government elections, all the fake promises the ANC and the EFF made to get themselves elected have come to further disrupting governance and service delivery.” Stressed Van Rhyn.
