The African National Congress (ANC) in Nkangala Region mourns the tragic and untimely passing of the Executive Mayor of the City of Emalahleni,Linah Malatjie together with her husband, Esau Malatjie.
Mayor Malatjie and her husband were fatally injured in a car accident on Sunday evening whilst driving between KwaMhlanga and Emalahleni when their car collided with the Ford Ranger bakkie.
ANC Regional Spokesperson Sello Matshoga said Linah’s passing leaves a huge void in the ANC and in Government. “She belonged to a generation of the post-apartheid activists who gave impetus to our struggle beyond the unbanning. Linah was in the forefront of the struggle towards the advancement of women emancipation empowerment.”
Mayor Malatjie cut her political teeth in the trade union movement as site-steward in the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) where she served as the Education Convenor, and Gender Convenor for the Greater Highveld Region. She later served as the Provincial Gender Convenor
Matshoga added that comrade Malatjie played a key role in stabilising the governance and systems in the City of Emalahleni towards a financially sustainable Local Government institution. “Her key focus as the Executive Mayor was on the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme which was underway across the City.”
The ANC in Nkangala Regions conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, the City of Emalahleni and the entire liberation movement.
