The department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will open one sluice gate at the Vaal Dam on Tuesday 28 December 2021. This is as the Dam has surpassed the 100% mark and recorded 107 % on Monday morning. DWS Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said the opening of the sluice gate follows consistent heavy rains over the last two weeks in the catchment supporting the integrated Vaal River System and the Orange River.
“The Department will continue to monitor the System and might open other sluices with time if the rain continues and the heavy inflows persist”.
Sputnik added that it is important for all the farmers and communities downstream of the dam to move their equipment away from the expected heavy flows, as well as ensuring that no one takes a chance to cross low lying bridges that could be flooded.
