A 57-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he appeared at the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 December 2021, in connection with the murder of his six-year-old granddaughter. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, 12 December 2021 at Vosman near Witbank.
Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said according to the information, the police at Vosman were notified about an incident where a man was being assaulted by some members of the community, accusing him of fatally stabbing his grand-daughter. “Upon arrival at the scene, the police intervened and managed to rescue him from the angry crowd.”
Mohlala added that on Monday, 13 December 2021 the police were summoned to a nearby hospital where the medical staff informed them that there was a little girl who was admitted with multiple stab wounds but died due to her injuries. “The police then opened a murder case and launched an investigation. A Preliminary probe linked the girl’s grandfather to the incident and he was then arrested as well as charged for murder hence his court appearance.”
He is remanded in custody until 26 January 2022 pending a psychiatric evaluation.
