Suspect shot dead during a shootout with hawks team
A suspect is in hospital under police guard after a shootout with the Hawks’ Tactical Operational Management Section in Randfontein on Friday afternoon, 10 December 2021.
An intelligence-driven operation was conducted by the Hawks with Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence, Tracker Connect, SAPS Highway Patrol, Badboyz Security, GTP Saturation Unit and Vision Tactical Security after information of suspects committing Rolex robberies and house robberies was received.
Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo said the suspects were spotted in an Audi A3 driving in Randfontein and they were instructed to stop.
“A shootout ensued which resulted in the death of a suspect and an injury to the other. The deceased suspect was found with a police appointment card.” The police escaped the shooting unscathed.
Nxumalo added that two firearms with ammunition, cellphones, several registration plates were seized. “It was discovered that the suspects’ vehicle was hijacked in July this year in Parkview.”
An investigation to link the suspects to other crimes is continuing. Cases of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property have been registered.
The arrested suspect will appear in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court as soon as he is released from the hospital.
