Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Thursday gave an update on the status of Covid-19 in the province. He reiterated that they are targeting young people in schools. “We will continue the vaccination drive with a particular focus on young people in our communities. As schools close, schools will open as vaccination sites.”

Makhura urged residents to avoid risky behaviours of large gatherings as they put people in greater risk. “We need to vaccinate as this is the most powerful weapon to defeat the Omicron variant. We are in a better position than we were during the 1st wave – we have vaccines and the best scientists.”

Premier further said there are 8 million adults in the province who are not vaccinated and this is cause for concern. “We want to persuade more people to take responsibility for their health by getting vaccinated. Once we have tried all options we will consider mandatory vaccinations”.
