Five suspects were arrested for allegedly being involved in the illegal mining of sand in Agri-Letaba at a farm outside Maake in Limpopo.

The Police received information about the suspects who were frequently mining sand illegally in the area without a permit.

Limpopo Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said a targeted joint operation that was conducted on Tuesday 23 November 2021 by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit and the Department of Minerals and Energy led to the arrest of these suspects. “The suspects were allegedly found busy loading the sand into a truck. They failed to give valid reasons and could not even produce a permit to mine the sand”.

During the arrest, Police confiscated one white truck, 07 shovels, and 03 hand picks. The suspects aged between 31 and 43 are expected to appear before Maake Magistrate court on Thursday 25 November 2021. Police investigations are continuing.
