The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) condemns the announcement of another wave of loadshedding. Eskom implemented Stage 2 load shedding from 14:00 on Wednesday, 17 November to 05:00 am on Saturday,20 November 2021.

SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said despite being afforded time to effect maintenance in the past year, especially during Covid-19 hard lockdown, Eskom leadership has failed to do maintenance.

“Consequently, South Africa has shed more gigawatts of electricity per hour than it has lost since the inception of load shedding in 2007.”

SAFTU reiterated that, on top of the widely documented economic effects of loadshedding, the continued load shedding in this period has dire impacts on the learners in the basic education and students in the higher education who are currently busy with their end-year examinations.

“SAFTU affirms its call for Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter to be fired.”
