Illegal immigrant remanded in custody

A 38-year-old illegal immigrant Muke Albert Kachelgwa appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court for possession of suspected stolen property, bribery and contravening the Immigration Act.

On 7 November 2021 Durban Central police were conducting patrol duties in the Durban CBD when they received information of a man dealing in stolen cellphones in Queen street and proceeded to the said place.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele KwaZulu-Natal said the police spotted the man and searched him. “He was found in possession of an iPad and various cellphones.

Kachelgwa failed to provide proof of ownership when he was requested and attempted to bribe the police officials. “It was discovered that he didn’t have the necessary documents to be in this country and was charged for contravening the Immigration Act, being in possession of suspected stolen property and bribery.”Explained Captain Mbele.

He is remanded in custody until 17 November 2021 for further investigation.
