The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says it is disturbed and disappointed by the release of a male motorist who brutally attacked a K9 Unit Inspector. A 25-year-old Slade Wood appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on R500 bail.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said Wood was arrested on Saturday night. “He was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm”
Mjonondwana said on Saturday night, 28 August 2021, Inspector Gugu Masuku was assaulted and racially abused at Eloff Extension and Baldwin Road, Village Deep while trying to apprehend Wood, who was driving recklessly and flouted traffic rules.
JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the department finds the leniency with which this matter has been handled worrisome as it is not reflective of the serious nature of the offence.
“Officers will not be discouraged and will continue to serve the City of Johannesburg with absolute pride and dedication. They will not be deterred from executing their duties.”
Fihla added that they hope that this case will get serious attention and that the suspect faces the consequences of his actions.
