Department of Correctional Services granted Former President Jacob Zuma compassionate leave in order to attend to a family bereavement. Zuma applied to the Department to attend his late brother Michael Zuma’s funeral who passed on few days ago.

Department’ spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said a sentenced offender who is granted permission to leave a correctional centre, remains a sentenced offender even while temporarily outside. “The permission granted to Zuma is for 22 July 2021.”

Meanwhile, COPE National Spokesperson Dennis Bloem said they are thinking of a situation where the supporters of Zuma refuse to let him go back to prison. “Will the security forces be up to the task to get him back to prison without spilling blood?”

Bloem maintained that  Zuma’s application to attend his brothers funeral is a flight risk.
