Police murder suspect remanded in custody

A 38-year-old Ayanda Tutu appeared in East London Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 21 July 2021 for alleged murder, armed robbery and possession of an un­licensed firearm.

It is alleged that on 18 June 2021 at about 18:30, two unknown gunmen entered the house of Sergeant Mphakameli Mazinywana (48) at Old Payne Location in Mthatha and shot him dead. Mazinywana was attached to the Mthatha police station.

Eastern Cape Hawks Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolondela said the suspects fled the scene with his service pistol. “ On Tuesday morning, 20 July 2021, the Mthatha based Haw­ks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in a joint operat­ion with Gqeberha Ta­ctical Response Team as well as Gqeberha Flying Squad arrested Tutu at his place of residence in Motherwell.”

Mgolodela added that Tutu was found in possession of a firearm with 12 rounds of ammun­ition. He is remanded in custody. The​ case was postponed to 23 July 2021 for a formal bail application in the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court.
