A 38-year-old Ayanda Tutu appeared in East London Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 21 July 2021 for alleged murder, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
It is alleged that on 18 June 2021 at about 18:30, two unknown gunmen entered the house of Sergeant Mphakameli Mazinywana (48) at Old Payne Location in Mthatha and shot him dead. Mazinywana was attached to the Mthatha police station.
Eastern Cape Hawks Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolondela said the suspects fled the scene with his service pistol. “ On Tuesday morning, 20 July 2021, the Mthatha based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in a joint operation with Gqeberha Tactical Response Team as well as Gqeberha Flying Squad arrested Tutu at his place of residence in Motherwell.”
Mgolodela added that Tutu was found in possession of a firearm with 12 rounds of ammunition. He is remanded in custody. The case was postponed to 23 July 2021 for a formal bail application in the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court.
