Rhino Horn Thieves sentenced

The Gqeberha Regional court on Thursday convicted and sentenced Jonathan Jeremy Perring (37) ,Keanon Terblanche (28) and Christo Shaun Swartz (30) for rhino horn theft.

It is reported that on 21 February 2021 the Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in Gqeberha conducted an operation after information was received that two persons were looking for buyers for a rhino horn with a street value of R500 000.

Eastern Cape Hawks Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the operation led to the arrest of the two men on the very same day. One rhino horn and two vehicles were seized during the operation. The duo made their first court appearance at Gqeberha New Law Court and was released on R10 000 bail each.

Mgolondela added that a third suspect was later arrested on 11 March 2021 through further investigation which also showed that rhino horn was stolen from his employer and he then sold it to the duo.

“They were each sentenced to 3 years imprisonment suspended for a period of 5 years, fined R150 000 or 30 months imprisonment of which R75 000 or 15 months is suspended for a period of 5 years.”

She further said the implication is that each accused will either pay R75 000 or undergo 15 months imprisonment.
