A man who raped his niece sentenced to life in prison

The Mahwelereng Regional Court in Limpopo on Monday, 12 July 2021 sentenced a 32 -year-old accused, Mokolwane Richard Matsemela to life imprisonment. The sentencing comes after the accused was found guilty and convicted for raping his 14-year-old niece on 14 May 2020.

Limpopo Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said on that day, the victim was about to leave home to school when her uncle threatened her with a knife and raped her in the toilet.

“Nobody else was in the house when the rape took place.The accused then fled and disappeared. The victim went to his other uncle’s workplace and reported the incident to him.”

Mojapelo added that the Police were immediately notified about the ordeal and the case was assigned to investigating officer Sergeant Billy Mohale of Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in Mokopane. “He thoroughly investigated the incident and the suspect was located and arrested.  He was positively linked to the case.”

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the investigating officer for working tirelessly in the case and ensured that the accused was sent to jail.
