Suspect arrested for attempted cash in transit heist

A 33-year-old male is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court on Friday 02 July 2021. He was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Mpumalanga team on Thursday 01 July 2021 after he was linked with the crime scene of an attempted cash-in-transit heist and attempted murder between Nelspruit and Barberton.

Colonel Philani Nkwalase of Mpulmalnga Hawks said it is alleged that on 06 May 2021 at about 07:00, suspects attacked a G4S armoured vehicle and Tactical Support Unit vehicle on the R40 Road between Nelspruit and Barberton and numerous shots fired at the (AV and TSU vehicles).

“Two security guards were injured and were taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspects allegedly hijacked a Toyota Hilux bakkie and fled.”

Nkwalese added that the suspects left behind two Mercedes Benz vehicles that were hijacked in Brooklyn in March 2021 and Mamelodi in May 2021, respectively. “No cash was taken during the attack.”
