The Congress of the People (COPE) says on the 5th of May 2021, it called on  President Ramaphosa to institute a travel ban on flights to and from India. “We said that it will be irresponsible for Government to wait until the situation is out of control, and then place the country back to a total shutdown.

COPE National Spokesperson Dennis Bloem reiterated that Ramaphosa decided not to listen to them or any other political party. “We think he doesn’t even listen to the experts and scientists who sit on the Covid-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee, who are there to give advice to him and the NCCC. He ignores all advice. He only listens to his political party the ANC.”

Bloom added that If President Ramphosa had listened to their call, it could have helped curb the infections.

On Sunday evening, 27 June 2021, President Ramphosa placed South Africa on alert level 4. Banning the sale of alcohol and closing schools for 2 weeks. Bloom added that COPE welcomes this decision but “it is long overdue”.

“The government wants to tell the country how dangerous the Delta variant is. We advised that a travel ban to and from India be instituted. The country is going from crisis to crisis sitting with a  President who is very indecisive, who doesn’t want to take hard decisions in the interest of the country.”

He added that the Covid-19 Vaccine rollout is total chaos. “It is completely unacceptable that the Government is not proactive in dealing with this life-threatening situation.”
