Immigration Officer in court for demanding bribery

A 40- year old immigration officer, Lwandisa Kolanisi stationed at East London Home Affairs appeared in Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on 15 June 2021 on alleged charges of extortion.

It is alleged that on 22 October 2020, three illegal immigrants were arrested during a joint operation between the South Africa Police Service( SAPS)  and the Department of Home Affairs around Mdantsane outside East London.

Eastern Cape Hawks’ Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said it is further alleged that Kolanisi demanded R2 000 bribe from each of the suspects to release them as they were being processed as detainees. “ An amount of R6000 is reported to have been paid to Kolanisi in cash on the same day and they were released unlawfully.”

Mgolondela added that the matter was reported to the police and later handed over to the Hawks for further investigation which resulted in Kolanisi’s arrest on 09 April 2021. She was subsequently released on a warning.

She made another brief court appearance in the same court on 15 June 2021 and the matter was referred to the Regional Court for a trial set for 22 June 2021 2 to set a trial date.
