A couple sentenced for dealing in drugs

Brenda Van Heerden (62) and her husband Basil van Heerden (61) were on Monday, 14 June 2021 convicted and sentenced by the East London Regional court for numerous charges of dealing in dagga.

It is reported that between 16 April 2021 and 21 May 2021, the Hawk’s in  East London together with Crime Intelligence, executed an operation regarding two suspects that were selling dagga to the members of the community from their residence in Chiselhurst East London.

Eastern Cape Hawk’s spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said both the accused were arrested on 21 May 2021 in possession of 899 grams of dagga.

“Their first court appearance in East London Magistrate court where they were released on R1000 bail each. The matter was remanded to the 29th  June 2021 but due to the insistence of their legal representative the matter was brought forward for finalisation hence the conviction and sentencing on 14 June 2021.”

They were both sentenced to pay a fine of R15 000 or 5 years imprisonment and “in addition sentenced to a further 5 years imprisonment suspended for 5 years provided they are not convicted for the same offence again during their suspension period.”
