The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape says it is disappointed and dismayed by the conduct of the ANC councillors who ‘connived’ with the opposition to remove the OR Tambo District Municipality Executive Mayor, Thokozile Sokanyile in a Council meeting on Monday 31st May 2021.
ANC PEC Provincial Spokesperson Loyiso Magqashela said this is the worst reactionary act that they have ever seen wherein councillors who are deployed by the movement connive with the opposition parties to oust a comrade deployed by the ANC.
“The broader community of OR Tambo District Municipality voted the ANC into power and not individuals and therefore it is the ANC that must determine how, when and where to deploy its cadres. Any attempt by any ANC deployee to change this mandate constitutes unforgivable sin.”
Magqashela added that their behaviour is a clear and unambiguous message to the ANC that they no longer have interest to serve the people of OR Tambo District or to remain members of the African National Congress. “We will therefore swiftly and decisively invoke our disciplinary processes to deal harshly with this matter.”
“We shall spare no effort in seeking to determine the motive behind this unacceptable and inexcusable conduct that is clearly designed to hand over the municipality to rogues at all cost, including undermining democratic process and disregarding the wishes of the people.”Concluded Magqashela.
