The Hawks in Mpumalanga arrested two males aged 42 and 43 on Thursday, 06 May 2021, at Kwaggafontein. This follows a joint search and seizure operation with Eskom investigators. Intelligence was received by the investigating officers regarding people suspected to be impersonating Eskom employees and installing illegal electricity connections for locals.
Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said the team proceeded to the address received and during the search two males were identified.
Sekgotodi said Pre-paid meter boxes, cables, split meter boards, cards and reflector jackets as well personal protective equipment and various other tools belonging to Eskom were seized for further investigation.
”A Nissan MP200 Bakkie was also seized as it is suspected to be proceeds of crime. The two were arrested and charged with tampering with essential infrastructure, theft of Eskom property as well as possession thereof.”
Sekgotodi added that suspects were also charged for the illegal installation of Eskom electricity. She said more arrests are imminent as investigations continue.
