Two learners died on Wednesday when a Kombi they were travelling in collided head-on with a Sedan at Senwabarwana. It is alleged that the taxi ferrying leaners to school was speeding when it collided head-on with a VW Sedan on the D1468 road at Ga-Maraise village in the Capricorn district.
The Kombi veered off the road and overturned. Two learners aged 14 and 15 were certified dead on the scene.
The spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety Matome Moremi Taueatsoala said nine other learners and the Kombi driver were rushed to Helen Franz hospital with minor injuries and later discharged.
“The driver of the Sedan escaped unharmed. Speeding is cited as a possible cause of the accident and investigations are continuing.”
Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya sent messages of condolences to the families of the two learners who lost their lives. MEC called on public transport operators especially those that are transporting learners to schools to be extra cautious.
