A member of the South African National Defence Force aged 53 is amongst the seven suspects arrested for incidents of public violence that erupted in Phalaborwa, Namakgale and Lulekane on Friday 09 April 2021.
Phalaborwa town was almost deserted when the R71 road, R40 road and other subsidiary roads were blocked by protesters using tree branches, burning tyres and rocks.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the violent protests hugely disrupted tranquillity in the affected areas as children could not go to school, people could not go to work and shops were closed.
“More police members had to be deployed to quell the violence. The suspects, aged between 23 and 53, were arrested during the targeted raids that were conducted at identified locations .More arrests are expected.”said Mojapleo.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has commended the members for tirelessly hunting down the suspects and bringing them to book
The suspects will appear in Namakgale magistrate on Thursday 15 April 2021.
