The Illicit Mining Team in Potchefstroom, in NorthWest Province, arrested two suspects on Wednesday, 24 March 2021, for illegal possession of gold-bearing material and illegal possession of ammunition. This was after members of the team received information about the illegal possession of firearms.
North West Police Spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said consequently, a 33-year-old woman and a man aged 35, were nabbed after the police searched a house in Kanana near Orkney and found seven 9mm live ammunition and gold-bearing material worth R1.2 million.
“The police further seized more than R300 000.00 which was found in possession of the suspects.”
Mokgwabone said the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has taken over the investigation of the case.
NorthWest Police Commissioner Sello Kwena applauded the team for the success and reiterated that police will continue to act strongly against those who commit illicit economic activities.
Meanwhile, both suspects are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court soon.
