The National Officials of the ANC will on Friday, 12th March 2021, meet with Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to discuss current developments. The ANC National Working Committee( NWC) is of the firm view that budget priorities should be reviewed in order to redirect the much-needed funding for the provision of necessary support in these institutions of higher learning.
On Thursday, the 11th of March 2021, Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC) Ace Magashule, received a memorandum of demands from protesting Wits University students who marched to Luthuli House.
Magashule assured students that the ANC “believes that the demands of the students were legitimate and consistent with ANC policy”. He reiterated the ANC’s commitment to ensure that access to education for all children, especially those from working-class and poor families, “would be made a reality.”
“The ANC is painfully aware of challenges that confront students in our institutions of higher learning regarding funding and is determined to act decisively in finding a long-lasting sustainable solution.” Read a statement issued
The ANC conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mthokozisi Ntumba who lost his life on Wednesday in the midst of the students’ protest.
The ruling party has called upon relevant authorities to speedily investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and to ensure that those responsible are held to account and that the deceased’s family gets justice.
“The ANC reiterates that one life lost is one life too many. We also wish all those who got injured during the protest a speedy recovery.”
