The Pongola Magistrate court in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, sentenced a 32-year-old former police officer, Mxolisi Donda, to 15 years imprisonment for murder. Donda was found guilty of premeditated murder by the same court on 19 January 2021.
He was charged with murder following an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on 01 December 2018. Donda was on his way home in a state vehicle. While he was driving on N2 freeway, there was a vehicle parked on the road which was obstructing him to freely pass.
IPID spokesperson Ndileka Cola said Donda took out a firearm and shot the deceased who was standing next to that vehicle. “The deceased tried to run away but the accused shot him, first shot missed him but unfortunately the second shot fatally wounded him.”
Cola added that Donda was dismissed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 06 May 2019.
She further said IPID is pleased with this sentence. “The Directorate further hopes that this harsh sentence sends a strong message that officers of the law are not above the law and they have an obligation to conduct themselves within the principles of the Constitution.” Concluded Cola.
