The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West Province says it will request its Shadow Minister of Police, Andrew Whitfield, to urgently engage with Minister Bheki Cele about the ongoing violence that is plaguing the Jouberton township in Klerksdorp.

It is alleged that gang members recently stormed the police station to express their anger with how police officers have been dealing with the ongoing torching of property that started in February.

DA North West Spokesperson on Community Safety & Transport, Freddy Sonakile said it is alleged that the police are being accused of protecting the culprits.

“It is suspected that the violence is linked to gangs who are disgruntled by the awarding of tenders by the Matlosana Local Municipality. We are of the view that, if the South African Defence Force (SANDF) are called out to deal with offenders of draconian lockdown regulations, surely they should be able to assist the people of Jouberton.” Added Sonakile.

The DA reiterated that it will leave no stone unturned to ensure that peace and stability are restored to the community of Jouberton.
