The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Monday afternoon, 01 March 2021, arrested eight police officers for allegedly murdering and torturing suspects whilst they were in police custody.

IPID spokesperson Ndileka Cola said it is alleged that on 23 February 2021 around 21:00, police members from Soweto Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit booked out three suspects from Lenasia Police Station to Protea Police Station. “It is alleged that the police officers interrogated the first suspect and whilst they were busy interviewing him, he collapsed due to seizure.”

Cola said the paramedics were called and certified him dead. The members took the two remaining suspects back to Lenasia Police cells in the early hours of 24 February.

“Due to the significant disjuncture between the police version of what transpired and that of the two surviving suspects as well as the fact that IPID was never called into the crime scene, the Directorate has reconstructed the crime scene to establish the facts of actually occurred in that crime scene.” Explained Cola.

She further said the IPID is also appointing a private pathologist to get a second opinion on the actual cause of death.” The investigation process continues”. Concluded Cola
