The South African Students Congress (SASCO) together with the Provincial Executive Committee members of Western Cape will be picketing outside Parliament on Wednesday 24 February 2021 when Finance Minister Tito Mboweni delivers the Budget Speech for the year 2021.
SASCO President Bamanye Matiwane said this will be their second picket aimed at ensuring that they put pressure on the government to do away with the implementation of “austerity measures”.
“We firmly believe that the plan to cut the Higher Education budget over the next 3 years by 6 Billion is nothing but a mockery of this important sector.”
Matiwane said they expect the minister to bring back the 9 Billion to NSFAS, increase student funding, Increase student allowances and to clear the historic debt.
“Education is a huge investment for any developing country so we find it totally absurd that the South African Government doesn’t see the impact of its decision to cut Higher Education budget in a country faced by skills shortage.” Concluded Matiwane.
