2020 Matric Class achieved 76.2%

The Basic Education Department released the pass rate of the 2020 matric results on Monday in Pretoria. The overall pass rate is 76.2%.

The 2020 academic year was a tough and unique year for every person involved in the education sector due to Covid-19, however, the matriculants did it against all odds.

The pandemic disturbed the normal way of studying with some learners and teachers passing on due to this virus.

 Minister Angie Motshekga said the government and its partners worked hard to save the academic year while also saving lives.

She said that “during the reopening of schools around June, the sector lost almost a term and had to trim the curriculum to ensure that teaching and learning continue in line with the WHO Covid-19 regulations.”

The was a controversy over the leakage of Mathematics and Physical Sciences exams.   “Umalusi declared that there were no systemic irregularities that could have compromised the integrity of the results.”

Motshekga further said 65000 learners sat for the exams, 24000 passed the National Senior Certificate exams, and over 3 000 of them got Bachelor Pass.

Provincial performance is as follows:

1. Free state 85.1%

2. Gauteng 83.3%

3. Western Cape 79.9%

4. KwaZulu Natal 77.6%

5. North West 76.2

6. Mpumalanga 73.7%

7. Limpopo 68.2

8. Eastern Cape 68.1%

9. Northern Cape 66%
