Five accused between the ages of 21 and 40, appeared in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for ATM Bombing.
It is alleged that a shop owner heard a loud bang from outside of his shop in the early hours of Saturday morning, 6 February 2021 in Itloleng Section, Bethanie. He saw four males at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) which is on the same premises as the shop.
North West Police Spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said the police were called to the scene and they confirmed that explosives were used at the ATM.
Mokgwabone added that one of the accused, a 40-year-old, was taken to the police station for questioning which revealed that he was a former police officer and used to work at Lethabong.
“The man subsequently led the police to Plastic View informal settlement in Rustenburg where another accused was arrested. In the course of the arrest, R3 700.00 of dye stained notes were confiscated.”
The five accused are remanded in custody and they will make their second court appearance on Tuesday, 16 February 2021 in Brits Magistrate court.
